  Hiroshi Yamamoto

Born in Shiga prefecture, Japan

Hiroshi Yamamoto (Hakuho) creates watercolours using the traditional style of Japanese painting,
Nihon-ga. The term Nihon-ga came into use during the Meiji period (1868-1912). It involves the use of charcoal, mineral pigments, shell white and, occasionally, gold leaf, on washi (rice or hemp paper) or silk. The effect is a texture and luminosity not seen in Western style painting.

Sumi-e, a form of Nihon-ga, is painted with black ink. Finding inspiration in such familiar subjects as flowers, birds, cats and other animals, Yamamoto paints in the Nihon-ga style using traditional material, techniques and tools.

Born in Shiga prefecture, Japan, Mr.Yamamoto graduated from the Kyoto Industrial Design Institute and the Kyoto Japanese Art School before moving to Toronto in the 1970s. After working in Toronto for several years as a graphic designer, Yamamoto returned to Japan to pursue further studies under Rokuro Yamamoto, a well-known Nihon-ga specialist. Since then, his work has received numerous awards in Japan, U.S. and Canada.

Mr. Yamamoto cites 16th century painter Tohoku Hasegawa as one of his main influences. However, he doesn't view his work as merely following the traditional style. Instead, he paints with own distinctive sense of freedom, trying to bring his work to a new level.
